Cleaning and Prevention

At Smithfield Dental we believe that prevention is key, which is why we recommend you practice a preventative oral hygiene routine every day. Brushing your teeth twice a day and flossing once a day is an easy way to keep your teeth and gums healthy.

We understand that everyone is different. So we aim to provide each person with tailored advice individual to their health and habits. It is important to visit the Dentist to receive a professional clean of your teeth. They will remove plaque that cannot be cleaned by brushing and check the overall health of your mouth. Most dental issues require only small maintenance if detected early. Even if you haven't visited the Dentist in some time it's never too late to get that bright healthy smile.

What are some preventative measures I can take?

  • Brush with a fluoride toothpaste every morning and night

  • Floss daily before bedtime

  • Get a check-up and clean every 6 months

  • Minimise unhelpful habits like sugary food/drink, coffee, and tobacco

What happens at a Dental Check up?

During a check-up the Dentist will carefully inspect each surface of each tooth, as well as your gums and health of your overall mouth. The Dentist can then discuss with you your treatment needs and desired outcome. Regular check up appointments like this mean that there is less opportunity for decay to take hold. Changes can be monitored regularly and any new decay can be treated early.

For your first consult with the Dentist most patients require dental x-rays. Our digital dental x-rays help the Dentist diagnose hidden decay between the teeth, as well as checking the integrity of previous dental work. Sometimes it is necessary to refer for a full mouth x-ray, known as an OPG. This is completed by an x-ray centre and is done through medicare free of charge.

Every six months we recommend patients also have a clean. A comprehensive clean of your teeth and gums is important, as tartar build-up can disguise underlying dental problems. This also gives us an opportunity to talk with you about your oral hygiene routine and give advice on any issues.
